The Arts Council of Moore County's Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship was established in 2000 with the goal to provide support to Moore County middle and high school students with a demonstrated talent and interest in the arts. The scholarship may be used for such items as tuition for a music or art camp, studying dance at a local dance company, or taking private lessons with an art or music teacher. The scholarship may not be used to fund college attendance.
The scholarship his named for Harry Barnes and Vaud Ancil Travis, III, two long-time and strong supporters of the Arts Council of Moore County and the arts throughout Moore County. In addition, a new fund was established in 2010 in memory of Carol Lawson Rouhier with the stipulation that it be used to award scholarships to any visual art applicants. Since the inception of the Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship, the Arts Council has awarded 55 scholarships in the amount of $16,495 to middle and high school students pursuing their interest in the arts.
